You Gave Yourself to Him

by Thomas Anderson

from the album My Songs Are the House I Live In

Her eyes had calm and kindness.

She laughed with half her face,

I tried to keep her entertained

While she searched the place;

And fiddled with the stitches

That zig-zagged 'cross her heart,

Seeking out the wild boys

To tear them all apart.

And so we spent the evening

Taking what we found,

And working up a rationale

Before the place burned down.

Her eyes had calm and kindness

When the world was in a panic

So we began our mighty work

Of building the Titanic.

I said You're such a funny girl

You break hearts on a whim,

I pulled you from the burning house

But then you ran back in;

I gave you gold and silver

But you traded them for tin,

I stole you from the Reaper

But you gave yourself to him.

Her eyes had calm and kindness,

That's what I won't forget

As I lie here in the trenches

It's like she's with me yet.

She said You call this freedom,

I said I call this war,

She said It's what's for dinner,

It's what we're fighting for.

As all the flares lit up the sky

She led the charge beyond,

And the foolish boys followed her

And sang her foolish song.

Her eyes had calm and kindness

And God's most perfect art,

Like a badge of honor

She lives above my heart

I said You're such a funny girl

You break hearts on a whim,

I pulled you from the burning house

But then you ran back in;

I gave you gold and silver

But you traded them for tin,

I stole you from the Reaper

But you gave yourself to him.
