Rommel's Polka

by Thomas Anderson

from the album My Songs Are the House I Live In

There is a girl out in west Texas

With hair of gold and eyes of blue,

Her grandpa was a German soldier

Took prisoner in World War Two.

He became a singing cowboy

Across the plains he chased his dreams,

His accent was less than authentic,

More Blue Danube than Abilene.

On his trusty palomino

With his guitar he rode away,

He tipped his hat to his sweetheart,

And Rommel's Polka he'd always play.

They say the tracks are still in the desert,

Of wandering men from long ago,

From the dusty hills of Tunisia

To the caves of Mexico.

Now Houston has a mighty skyline

And San Antone the Alamo,

But it's to those blue eyes shining

My Lone Star heart longs to go.

They say that love can be so elusive,

It's kinda like the people say --

The Marfa Lights may shine in the distance,

You get too close they fade away.

There are lots of girls out in west Texas

With hair of gold and eyes of blue,

They love to dance to Rommel's Polka

And they will dance all night with you.
