Chelsea Grail

by Thomas Anderson

from the album Heaven

All your friends deserted you and went their separate ways,

That's the world you left behind on your dying day.

So you're looking for a brand new home up in the great beyond,

With your candles and harmonium, your solitude and songs.

A studio apartment where the angels tread,

A shower and a kitchenette and a narrow bed.

The landlord looks you up and down as he dials the phone,

Checking out your references -- Andy Warhol, Brian Jones.

All through the concrete canyons you made your lonely quest,

To your calling you stayed true and you did your best.

Along the frozen borderlands until your dark wings failed,

Leaving only pilgrims searching for the Chelsea grail.
