House of Love

by Thomas Anderson

from the album Moon Going Down

He said "Baby we'll build a life,

Hammer and saw, man and wife.

Wear my ring, repeat my vows,

And I'll give you all the sweat of my brow."

So he drove in nails where her will would fail,

And he built up walls where the past would call;

He put in beams up above her dreams,

And he laid concrete all around her feet.

Well how can you live in a house of love

With the road beyond and the stars above,

White picket fence just can't contain

All those dreams you're gonna dream again.

Sailor's chest and double bed,

And the weathervane turned above their heads;

And he cut the glass and he planed the wood,

And he held her there right where she stood.

And he hung the blinds on her valentines,

And the picture frames on her lovers' lanes;

He carved a stone where her eyes would roam,

He barred the door and he called it home.

Well how can you live in a house of love

With the road beyond and the stars above,

White picket fence just can't contain

All those dreams you're gonna dream again.

Do you make your bed where the land is dead,

Do you raise a home where the waters roam;

Do you make your plans on the shifting sands,

And she knew he knew she knew that the house would stand.
