Acting Stupid

by Thomas Anderson

from the album Ladies and Germs

If we all pay attention and everybody cheers,

Paint a smile on your face we can get out of here,

Say Your jacket's so cool and your boots are fine,

Like something from a movie l saw one time.

You got the vernacular, you nailed it yet

The very way you walk and hold your cigarette.

So play me your song, strum your guitar,

Sneer at me when I say you'll go far.

You're just acting stupid.

Nobody thinks it's cool.

You're just acting stupid,

Always playing the fool.

I'll bet you froze in the emperor's new clothes,

Better watch your step looking down your nose:

What do you expect, what do you think,

Shall we hold the door and comp your drinks?

And all the young girls how they will swoon

So close your eyes and enjoy the cartoon;

Close your eyes, it's just like tv,

Yeah close your eyes so you won't see.

You're just acting stupid.

Nobody thinks it's cool.

You're just acting stupid,

Always playing the fool.

Behind your back you don't realize

How they laugh at you and roll their eyes,

Your so-called friends they smirk and they smile,

They got more teeth than a crocodile.

How they talk trash, how they talk down,

Smearing your name all over this town;

And you so oblivious, just look around,

You so ridiculous sayin' Rock 'em on down.

You're just acting stupid,

Nobody thinks it's cool.

You're just acting stupid,

Always playing the fool.

If we all pay attention it'll be over soon

And all the hot air will burst the balloon,

Choo-choo train, take us home again,

The clock strikes two and it's pouring rain.

Hey that's terrific, now we gotta go,

Gimme a call when you book the next show.
