Metal in the Kitchen

by Thomas Anderson

from the album The Debris Field

Johnny's on the deep-fryer

I'm workin' prep,

Jimmy's washin' dishes

And coughin' up strep;

Food on the floor

And the freezer's broken,

Flies everywhere

With the back door open.

Jazz in the dining room

Blues in the bar,

Metal in the kitchen

You can hear it from your car.

Sink's backed up

And the meat's gone bad,

Customers bitchin'

And the manager's mad;

Tables dirty

And the busboys quit,

Nobody's tippin'

And the waitresses split.

Reggae on the dance floor

Country in jail,

Metal in the kitchen

It never does fail.

Holes in the wall

Where the rats chewed through,

Food handler card

Never been renewed;

Get on the grease traps

Clean the flue,

I wouldn't eat here

If you paid me to.

Rap in the parking lot

Punk downtown,

Metal in the kitchen

Lay it on down.
