Goin' South

by Thomas Anderson

from the album The Debris Field

Rolling' up that old glory road

To claim my wings on the streets of gold,

But halfway to the sky my tank runs dry,

I look around and I don't know a soul.

Mister can you catch me a ride,

Tryin' to reach that Heavenly tide;

He says "Sorry, son, my judgment day is come,

My destination's on the other side."

Goin' south

Goin' south

Before I get the words

Out of my mouth,

Everybody says they're goin' south.

Girl in a truckstop in the sky,

I said "Won't you help me reach my home on high;"

She said "I'm with these folks

Whose clothes smell like smoke,

We lost our angels but we've got our pride."

Goin' south...

And buses, bikes and trucks and SUVs,

Bumper to bumper endlessly;

Gabriel plays, they just smile and wave,

With reservations for eternity.

Goin' south....
