Charity

by Thomas Anderson

from the album The Debris Field

I want to thank you for your sweet kiss

When everybody's around,

That sparkle in your eyes

When I'm your clown.

You are so merry, you are so free,

And you're the star of the show;

Maybe I make you look good,

I really don't know.

But I love your charity,

You're so much more than fair to me,

And you know it's a guarantee

I'll come when you throw me a crumb.

It's a sweet dream I sometimes have,

But if I asked you I realize

I would just see bewilderment

In your eyes.

And when we're dancing and when you flirt,

And when you slip your arm in mine,

I know there's nothing in your heart

That I've left behind.

But I love your charity...

I'm just a beggar, my hat in my hands,

I'm not complaining, don't misunderstand;

When there's no crowd to stand and stare

You walk through me like air.

But I love your charity....
