Song for Walter Mondale

by Thomas Anderson

from the album On Becoming Human

Walter Mondale was the underdog

Against the Reagan juggernaut

He fought upon the angels' side

And Reagan trounced him far and wide

So he went off to lick his wounds

In the Minnesota afternoon

An elder statesman he became

Exiled on the northern plains

Nearly twenty years flew by

And the Saint Paul party chiefs did cry

You were always there before

We need you for our senator

In the Gopher State 2002

Once more he made the network news

He threw his hat into the ring

And resurrected all his dreams

Hubert Humphrey and the angel band

Surely smiled and raised his hand

To still the cold Canadian wind

And bless the venture of his friend

At the whistle stops they cheered him on

Duluth to St Cloud and beyond

And when the ballots all came in

They counted and he lost again

There are times when we feel deceived

When we ask why did I believe

You stand amidst the damage done

Before the eyes the everyone

Walter Mondale, sir, I can relate

I've known your pain I've shared your fate

Our stories fit like hand in glove

Though yours was politics and mine was love
